Largest Arikara Indian Relic collection.
Howard & Kathryn Loitwood's love of Native American history took them and their children on relic hunting adventures along the Missouri River endless weekends between 1925 and 1967. Over the years, they discovered a number of Indian village sites, and recovered massive amounts of arrowheads, scrapers, rare bone tools (fishhooks and awls), pottery, hammers, celts, and more. In the end, the Loitwoods had amassed the largest collection of Arikara artifacts. Most of the artifacts remained in hundreds of cigar boxes for years, even after the eventual death of Howard in 1989, and Kathryn in 1994. Their children, “Tick” Howard Loitwood and Diana (Loitwood) Webb subsequently inherited the collection.
